Google acquires BumpTop

Google is certainly making good on their promise to again start acquiring companies on a pretty quick pace. Latest on the list is BumpTop, a multitouch 3D interface for the computer desktop. Chatter around the web has suggested Google might use some of BumpTop’s IP to give Android a makeover, possibly even making a 3D environment. Then, of course, there’s the fantastic multitouch implementation BumpTop has integrated into their UI and it’s pretty impressive. BumpTop raised $1.65 million in funding in 2007 and the rumored selling price is said to be $35-$40 million. Check out the video of it in action after the break!

Viigo – If you’re looking for a powerful RSS feed reader for your BlackBerry, look no further than this app. Viigo lets you add multiple RSS items from sites you visit regularly. It allows you to add as many as 2,500 subscriptions.

Vlingo – This app turns your BlackBerry devices into a voice-enabled mobile phone that allows you to do voice-dialing, voice-texting and voice emailing. To use it, you must assign one of your BlackBerry device’s key to activate the app. It also allows you to update your Facebook status, create tasks and memos as well as open built-in applications and other third-party applications by using your voice.

WebMessenger - This app will let you chat with friends whether they are on AOL, Google, ICQ, Jabber, Skype, Yahoo and MSN. It imports your contact list from those IM clients and allows you to set your status, see who’s online and of course chat with them for as long as you want.

Where for BlackBerry – A GPS-based local search app for your BlackBerry, this app lets lets you connect with businesses in the area around you. You can also use it to check on gas prices, events, locating specific establishments, and more. It works with Bold 9000, 8800, Curve and Pearl BlackBerry series.

WorldMate Live – A useful app specifically for the road warriors, WorldMate Live delivers content and services to your BlackBerry device including itineraries, flights, hotel information, meetings, public transportation and car rental information. It allows you to export travel information including e-mail confirmation, corporate calendars and more. The app also provide current time and weather for one set location, a weather function offering five day forecast for any major city, and a currency converter for U.S. dollars, Euros or Japanese Yen.

Yahoo Go – Although this app only works on newer BlackBerry models, it does so in an impressive fashion. Featuring a slick interface, this app brings Yahoo’s news, weather, sports, finance, and entertainment news feeds, driving directions and mapping to your BlackBerry. It also supports Flickr and lets you do various Flickr activities in the comforts of your BlackBerry screen.

Yahoo Messenger Client - Not wanting to be outdone by Google, Yahoo also released its own free BlackBerry IM client. And it works and function similarly as the Gmail client. This app is a must have for YM fans.

Ski Lift Ticket Retailer Liftopia Raises $1.3 Million

San Francisco-based Liftopia, an online retailer of lift tickets and mountain resort activities, is today announcing it has raised $1.3 million in a round led by First Round Capital. New investors in today’s round also include Dave Morin and Chris Sacca, who participated with existing investors Erik Blachford and Sam Shank.

Today’s investment brings Liftopia’s total raise to nearly $3 million.

In short, Liftopia wants to do for ski lifts and other mountain-related activities what OpenTable did for dining reservations, the company says. It’s now working with 150 resorts across North America in an estimated $5 billion market. Europe, whose market is around four times the size, is also on the startup’s future roadmap.

For those unfamiliar with the service, Liftopia lets you buy your lift tickets online and in advance. By doing so, consumers can save up to 80% off the walk-up rates for the lifts. Resorts benefit too, by insuring against volatile weather conditions, snow conditions and other events that may keep skiiers away from the slopes.

The resorts participate in the system for free, but for each transaction, Liftopia keeps a portion of the revenue. The company says that over the past year, transaction volume and revenue have grown in the triple digits.

Currently, participating resorts are located in California, Colorado, Utah, New York, New England, British Columbia and Quebec, such as Park City, Winter Park, Aspen, Deer Valley, Snowbird, Mammoth, Kirkwood, Stowe, Sun Valley, Taos, Snowshoe, Mont Tremblant, Killington, Sunday River, Banff and Whiteface.

Investors in today’s round include, as noted above, First Round Capital, Sacca and Morin, as well as Sand Hill Angels, Sam Shank (founder of HotelTonight and TravelPost) and Erik Blachford (early Expedia employee and the former CEO of Expedia, Inc./IAC Travel; investor in Farecast, Zillow, Hipmunk and Room 77).

Apple strikes deal with Sony for cloud music service, report claims

Apple has now reportedly signed three of four major U.S. record labels as it prepares to launch a new cloud-based streaming music service in the near future. According to Bloomberg, Apple has inked a deal with Sony that will allow the label’s massive catalog to be used alongside a forthcoming streaming product Apple will likely unveil next month. The news comes just one day after Apple is said to have finalized a similar deal with EMI. Google recently unveiled its Music Beta by Google service and before that, Amazon launched its Cloud Drive and Cloud Player products. Neither service is accompanied by deals with record labels, however, so their utility is reduced to providing users with a means to upload music they have purchased elsewhere and then stream it to a variety of devices. With the support of major labels, Apple will be able to introduce a paid service with a great deal of added functionality. “Streaming iTunes” has been rumored to be in development for years, and it looks like Apple is finally ready to make it a reality.

“Google Spends $4.9 Million On Modu Patent Portfolio”

Remember Modu, the Israeli phone maker who never quite found a market for its itty bitty cell phones? That’s ok if you don’t, because the semi-omniscient Google does. Back in 2008, Modu came up with a tiny modular cell phonethat could slip into a number of different sleeves to be able to perform different actions and functions.

Now, over three years later, Google has received permission to buy Modu’s patent portfolio, in what we assume are plans to resuscitate the forgotten phones that were only previously picked up by a few carriers. Shortly after Modu’s entrance into the mobile arena, the company whipped out its latest and greatest phone models in preparation for an IPO, but unfortunately had to shut down operations after running out of cash.

Of course, Google was happy to step in and lend a helping hand in the form of a $4.9 million IP purchase. The Google funds will go towards payment of Modu’s creditors and ex-Modu employees who have yet to be paid. We’d expect that Google has new Android technology in the crosshairs with this patent portfolio acquisition, although the search beast has yet to officially comment on plans.
